The human body is meant to move. Unfortunately many of us have lifestyles that require many hours of sitting throughout the day. We commute to work, sit at a desk in front of computer and on the phone, then we commute home and eat dinner and sit down to watch television. Over time this type of lifestyle will take a toll on the mind and the body. Sitting all day and not moving will affect the body's posture, strength and stamina along with creating many other health issues.
Sitting for long periods of time and having a sedentary lifestyle can cause aches and pains, weight gain, high cholesterol, your muscles start to atrophy and bone loss can occur. On average someone who sits over 7 hours a day for over a decade will have seven years cut short off their lifetime.
Adding some sort of exercise or activity everyday will counter many of these effects. There are simple things you can do to help the body maintain a healthy state.
Get up to move around during your day. Make a point every hour to stand up and stretch, walk around the office for a minute or two. It is easy to do some active stretching to get the body loose and not break a sweat.
Getting at least 30 minutes of activity a day is critical. Get to the gym a couple times a week and work on your resistance training. Our bodies need resistance training in some form to maintain our muscle mass and keep our bodies strong. The other days a week work on cardiovascular exercise and do some yoga or pilates to help your core strength and flexibility.
Getting exercise does not have to be an all or nothing mentality. Work to keep your body in motion on a daily basis. Change up your activities so you mentally stay interested and keep your body guessing. This will do wonders for your body and your overall health. This includes your mental state. By staying active all areas of your life will improve.
Exercise is the fountain of youth and will make a big difference in your life. Stay active, stay healthy, be positive and live longer!
